My Story

200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training

I wasn't very sporty as a kid. It was actually at art school that I started doing yoga classes and eventually went to India to practice. I did my yoga teacher training in 2004 and have been teaching for over 20 years now. When I became a Dad in 2005, teaching yoga was a great job as it meant that I could be with my kids through much of the day. It was great working with so many different kinds of people in different workplaces and yoga studios, as well as running the popular ‘Yoga For Mums’ class in Island Bay. 

As I became more interested in the subtleties of how people move, I trained in The Feldenkrais Method™ and taught Awareness Through Movement™ classes, which offer a very gentle process to learn different ways of moving. Over this time I also became more interested in weight training and also started training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (now a Black Belt).

Today I'm a proud dad of 2 teenage girls who I take rock climbing (indoors and out). I train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, climb, lift weights, run almost every week, and struggle to manage my maximum recoverable volume (but I love it). 

I am now really interested in working with people 1 on 1 and have been working as a personal trainer since completing the NZIHF course in 2019. Personal training is a great way for me to pull many of my interests and experiences together. 

What I’ve learnt is that there are a lot of ways for you to approach your physical and mental wellbeing. The biggest determinant of how effective any change will be for you is how you understand it and how meaningful it is for you. Engaging in that process with you is what I find really satisfying and useful.

I really look forward to my sessions at ONI. The gym space isn't overcrowded and has a relaxed vibe. If you feel intimidated by the thought of going to a gym, this is a great place to come. The PTs are welcoming and there is a really nice atmosphere.

My PT Oli is excellent, he is very knowledgeable with an intuitive, calm approach. He listens and tailors the exercises to me. After a few weeks, my lingering sciatica was gone. I have become more confident and aware of how I move and the exercises I can do to stay injury free. Oli has helped me enjoy the process of getting more mobile and stronger. I highly recommend ONI!
